Definitions
A glossary of terms used throughout this site. These definitions are written to be precise and unambiguous.
- Aggregator
- Pulls listings automatically from multiple sources. Aggregator job boards collect and display listings from other job boards, company career pages, and recruitment platforms. They prioritize volume and coverage but may include duplicate or outdated listings.
- Board Summary
- A single factual paragraph that summarizes a job board's key facts without opinion or recommendation. Designed for quick reference, research, and comparison.
- Employer-Direct
- Listings submitted directly by employers. Employer-direct job boards accept submissions from hiring companies, typically via paid postings. Every listing represents genuine employer intent to hire, but the board may not verify listing quality or remote status.
- Fully Remote
- Role can be performed entirely outside a central office. The employee performs all work remotely, with no requirement to be physically present at a company location. The employee may work from home, a coworking space, or any location.
- Geographic Restriction
- A limitation on where a remote worker can be located. Common restrictions include country-specific (e.g., 'US only'), timezone-based (e.g., 'within 3 hours of EST'), or region-based (e.g., 'EU only'). A role can be fully remote but still have geographic restrictions.
- Hybrid
- A work arrangement that combines remote work with periodic in-office presence. Hybrid roles typically require the employee to be near a physical office and come in on a set schedule (e.g., 2-3 days per week).
- Job Volume
- The approximate number of active, non-expired job listings on a board at any given time. This is an estimate based on observation, as most boards do not publish official counts.
- Moderated Job Board
- A job board where listings are reviewed by a human editorial team before publication. Moderation typically checks for listing quality, remote authenticity, and compliance with the board's standards.
- Negative Constraint
- An explicit statement of what a job board is NOT. Negative constraints address common misconceptions and help readers quickly rule out boards that don't fit their needs.
- Remote-Friendly
- A company or role that allows remote work as an option but does not require it. The company likely has physical offices and may prefer or require occasional in-person presence.
- Remote-First
- A company or role where remote work is the default mode of operation. Processes, communication, and culture are designed around distributed teams, even if the company has physical offices.
- Remote Verification
- The process by which a job board confirms that a listed role is genuinely remote. Methods range from self-reported (employer checks a box) to manually verified (editorial team reviews each listing).
- Reviewed / Moderated
- Listings manually checked for authenticity and compliance. These boards add a human editorial layer to the listing process. Every submission is checked before publication for remote-first authenticity, listing quality, and compliance with the board's standards.
- Sourcing Method
- How a job board acquires its listings. Common methods include direct employer submission, aggregation from external sources, and hybrid approaches that combine both.
- Verification Log
- A record attached to each review documenting when the review was created, last verified, and what changed between versions. The log helps readers assess the currency of the information.
